This amazing place was consumed by forest fires in late 2020 so this image is a testimony of what it was. Model 3 of the series. @strangelyelated_

I am totally excited to launch a new artist series for everyone in love with the forest and bold enough to wear it 😎
These light jackets were made in collaboration with @strangelyelated_ and produced with fairly sourced materials. All the variations feature my photographic work from the Colombian and Peruvian Amazon made in the last five years! The jacket in this post called “Vibrant Forest” is a photo made with induced fluorescence deep in the Peruvian Amazonian night at @caminoverdetambopata (a reforestation station in Madre De Dios, Peru) A big part of the proceeds will go to supporting Indigenous filmmakers in the Andes-Amamazon and Indigenous Media Collectives through @nambi_rimai_comunicacion

Installation views of this wall composition with images from our archive with @nambi_rimai_comunicacion + Studio Felipe Castelblanco and a film woven by @lydiazimmermann As part of “Vibrant Waters” a show curated by @_nada_rosa_ at @temporary_gallery for @photoszene in Cologne. //// Throughout Amazonian cosmologies, including those from the Siona, Inga and Kamënstá nations in Colombia's Southwest, it is said that various riverbeds across the rainforest were carved out by a magical snake moving across the forest. This snake is the very force of water, which meanders throughout the territories as a cloud, a river, a flood, or a wall of mist. Between the Andean mountains and the lower Amazon rainforests, water propels a world in constant motion, shaping land, lives and politics. Borrowing from this force this photographic composition has emerged, gathering the views of Indigenous creators from Ñambi Rimai Media Collective, artists Felipe Castelblanco and Lydia Zimmermann over these territories. Together, these images weave a visual journey that follows the rhythm of water moving downwards and upwards, and where disonat narratives of resistance, abandonment, hope and despair ondulate together in unison to amplify the voices of a process of biocultural resistance that like a river, sometimes overflows the landscape with new meaning, while other times it retreats into quiet undercurrents. @hgkbasel_institutkunst

@felipecastel During the #beyondconservation2022 residency, I spent time with plants during the day & through the darkness of the night. Equipped with special UV portable lamps that induce fluorescence and a multispectral camera capable to see beyond the human visual spectrum of light, I spent time crisscrossing layers of invisibility, shadow, & mystic nights in the primary. There, I was able to produce images that render subtle and sub-visible relations maintained among forest beings while in darkness, from plants positioning their leaves to capture the dim light of the day to spores, fungi, and pollen holding together a network of interactions. This work took place at @caminoverdetambopata, a living seed bank & a hugely important buffer zone where endangered Amazonia plants and trees are given space & time to thrive. Together, these images comprise a new photographic series that brings the viewer closer to a somewhat unfamiliar view of the rainforest: the night & all its rich encounters which often escape the human gaze.

Parallel to the photographs, I gathered footage & interviews with various hosts & experts, exploring the issue of plant intelligence & how plants become active in mobilizing human communities to part-take in restorative processes.

After the gold mining rush in Madre de Dios, scientists, land defenders, & Indigenous communities seem devoted to mitigating the damage caused by deforestation and mercury poisoning of soils, air, and rivers. Therefore, plant teachers like Bobinzana are called upon to teach us modes of plant-led remediation and worlding. In the process, these plants become co-conspirators poised with huge potential to mobilize together human & non-human communities in search of collective survival & against unprecedented anthropogenic challenges. These conversations, recordings, & visual research will result in a new film essay.

‘Often, when we find water and trees in the middle of the desert, we call these sites oases. But what words should be used once we encounter barren and desert-like landscapes in the middle of the rainforest?

What we learned is that with its current methods, gold mining is quickly producing an inverse oasis inside the Madre de Dios region, for lack of a better word, making the rapid desertification of the forest a palpable reality. Witnessing this process first-hand clarified old and introduced new questions.

After trees are cut, soils are dredged and the biota gets carved out of the landscape, all we can see is a terrifying resemblance to one of the Amazon’s distant cousins, which are no other but the African deserts. Without the crucial layer of decomposing leaves and forest debris, the Amazon’s soils are devoid of nutrients to grow life and the piercing heat of the tropics becomes unbearable. Therefore, plants can no longer be seen as passive actors in the cosmic play of life. Plants create and sustain the weather, enable life at all scales, create the forest, and teach communities how to survive, or else resist constant acts of ecocide.‘- @felipecastel

What is not owned cannot be sold.

The Amazon forest is the lungs of the world, and home to diverse flora, fauna, and human communities. And yet governments and companies continue to destroy its resources in the name of profit.

Through collective activism that arose during the Beyond Conservation 2022 Artist residency in the Tambopata National Reserve, Peru, the artists are challenging the authorities’ sense of ownership over the forest. They also demand that the leaders at COP27 take definitive action to protect the forests of the world.

They used a typical banner, widely used in Latin American cities to signal the sale of a property, but in a much larger format, approximately 6 meters high. Once positioned in the expanse of the jungle, the banner then appears minuscule.

In this collective installation, with the participation of different artists, forest dwellers, and people from native communities, they turn the message of this common sign on its head: “esta propiedad no está en venta” (this property is not for sale).

Durante un viaje de investigación a la Amazonia peruana, @felipecastel [CH/CO] examinó la inteligencia de las plantas, cómo se manifiestan en las relaciones entre naturaleza y cultura y cómo se comunican – por veces a través de la luz ✨

Con la colaboración de @studio_verde_air, el artista trabajó en el Centro de Reforestación Camino Verde (@caminoverdetambopata) en las orillas de la reserva de Tambopata y observó prácticas ancestrales para para desarrollar acciones de reparación en zonas devastadas por la minería del oro.

During a research trip to the Peruvian Amazon, @felipecastel [CH/CO] investigated plant intelligence, how they manifest in nature-culture relations and how they communicate – sometimes through light ✨

Collaborating with @studio_verde_air, the artist worked at Camino Verde Reforestation Centre (@caminoverdetambopata) on the banks of the Tambopata reserve and observed ancestral practices to deploy remediation efforts in areas devastated by gold mining.
